About this conversation

Barry McDonald discusses Aboriginal bush musicians and the fusions of colonial music culture.

This is the second of two conversations Barry has with Hamish discussing his time recording bush (folk) music from around the New England region. Initially, this conversation focuses on aboriginal bush musicians Barry met from within the broader New England area, like the Archibald Family. Barry collected a range of complete songs, parts of songs, and different versions of songs, that carried in them a fusion of traditional colonial bush culture and aboriginal/Australian perspectives. He feels this bush culture/bush music has largely gone today. Barry also feels that the role of Irish music and the Irish tradition is often over emphasised in the broader discourse around folk/bush music today.
