“I think the idea was that we would have a hundred people each growing a thousand trees in their backyard and then we would go out to farms and plant them.”

About this conversation

Reflecting on whether enough has been done to ensure the long term success of landcare in New England, David Curtis and Chris Nadolny remember the start of the Armidale Tree Group.

David Curtis and Chris Nadolny have been working on the problem of Eucalyptus dieback in the New England area of NSW since the 1970s. In this conversation they address the question, 'Have we done enough?' They reflect on what has been learnt over the years about dieback and land management, and recount some of the research, replanting and land conservation work they have been involved in. They discuss institutions, projects and people that have been pivotal in landcare and dieback mitigation since the 1980s, and reflect on the current state of landcare in the area. Looking to the future, some concerns are raised, including the possibility that lessons learnt about dieback in the 1980s and 1990s are being forgotten. However there is also optimism about the increased capacity of communities and institutions to retain a culture of landcare into the future.
