About this conversation

Uralla foundry fellas, Geoff Swilks and Charlie Rudd, talk with local historian, Arnold Goode, about some of the tricks of the old foundry trade.

Foundry owners, Charlie Rudd (Phoenix foundry) and Geoff Swilks (G&C Foundry) talk with Arnold Goode (local historian) about the history of the Uralla foundries - principally the ones established by Henry Goddard and Christopher Jung (Young) - from 1870 to 1970. The three men pool together their common knowledge to track the respective foundries over the years, reflecting on the talents and innovation of the foundry workers and the different approaches the foundries took. They discuss: the different foundry recipes used for casting (like using green sand); casting techniques to work with different metals, and the wooden molds used. The conversation is an insiders document into furnaces and blasting, different styles of metals used in decorative building and commerce within the greater area, as well as some of the changes over the years.
