About this conversation

Derek Bashford talks with his son, Garry, about orchard life in Kentucky.

Derek Bashford shares with his son, Garry Bashford, family memories around orchard life in the Kentucky area. He explains how his father, a veteran of the first World War, was a recipient of a small block of land in Kentucky under the soldier settlement scheme. Derek followed in his father's footsteps and went into orchard work in Kentucky. His family was one of a number of other families who had been part of the soldier settlement program. Derek talks of what it was like for both his father and himself to eke out an existence from apples in the early years. He refers to the harvests, the diseases, the processes in getting fruit to market, life raising a family in the Kentucky area, social life, and the perilous state of fruit growing in the New England area today.
