About this conversation

Kent Mayo from the Uralla Historical Society and architect, Peter Myers, recall the community's support for buying and renovating McCrossins Mill.

Kent Mayo from the Uralla Historical Society and architect Peter Myers recount the story of the restoration of McCrossin's Mill, a project significant not only for its award winning architecture but also because it was a cooperative community project. Kent tells of the Historical Society's decision to buy and restore the old mill building in 1982 when there was danger of it being demolished. Peter - who was the architect leading the project - speaks of the intent they had to preserve the identity and original meaning of the building. They tell stories of the tremendous community involvement in the project, both in terms of raising the finance and of carrying out the restoration (almost all the work was done by volunteers). They discuss the importance of the building as an enduring cultural exhibit and describe how it has provided a benchmark for heritage restoration projects since. They end by discussing the importance of the Mill to the Uralla community.
