“Most people moved from station to station, depending on the work... they camped on the station... I loved it.”

About this conversation

Aboriginal elder, Bob Faulkner fondly recounts what it was like doing it tough in the late forties - early fifties.

Bob shares with Penny a range of fond memories of growing up in and around Uralla. He speaks about what it was like to live in the area commonly known as the Panhandle - an aboriginal community not far out of Uralla - and the sense of camaraderie he felt with the others who lived there. He speaks of his early years involved in hunting, shooting, rabbiting and mining. Bob began his schooling at 11 years old and, upon leaving at 15, he began work at the local Uralla post office, where he worked for many years and climbed the ranks. Bob depicts how he and his family made the best of life despite hardships like growing up in the bush with little money and having to survive the cold winter nights.
