“Every day I'd make an excuse to go across to the bank... for small change or something like that, just to say hello to her.”

About this conversation

Peter and Helen Phillips, married for 45 years, remember how they first met and began their romance back in 1966.

Peter Phillips recounts with his wife, Helen, the history of Peter's and his family's businesses in Uralla, from his parents moving to Uralla in 1939 to run his uncle's newsagency, through to Peter's own shops over the years - particularly Peter Phillip's Sports and Toys, which he and his family ran for 48 years. Woven through this history are stories and memories from Peter and Helen's lives in Uralla, including: Matron McMaugh's Private Hospital where Peter was born; Peter starting his own shop aged 18; the booming town that was Uralla in the 1950s; Uncle Roy's picture theatre, the Roxy; how Helen and Peter met and married; their three sons; the neighbouring shops in Uralla; the shop's customers, and the Uralla Tennis Club. Peter and Helen retired from the shop seven years ago. They end their conversation by expressing their love of Uralla and their gratitude to the people of the town.
